Day 2: Sing Along with Me and Maren
Day 2 of the Wreck Your Heart Advent Calendar…
Well, I couldn’t not talk about MUSIC, could I?
I write to music most of the time. I don’t need to—I can also write to silence or cafe noise, white noise. I always build a playlist for the project I’m working on, sometimes themed songs, or just songs that are working for me at the moment.
Usually ONE song rises out of the playlist to be The Song that helps me write that book. For Wreck Your Heart, The Song is this one: “Circles Around This Town” by Maren Morris.
Today’s treat: Listen to “Circles Around This Town” with me. [link to video]
The lyrics are perfect for Wreck Your Heart, I think, because it’s a young songwriter singing about the struggle to get where she wants to be and go. A song about writing songs. “Trying to say something with meaning, something worth singing about…”
Wreck Your Heart is a book about writing songs. In a way. In another way it’s a book about writing. In a bigger sense, maybe it’s about writing your life.
I saw Maren Morris live this year. She didn’t sing this song, but, hey, she’s got places to go.
